Coleman, White, and the FAAB you have left

The Week 8 wire is not decided by Sunday's 60-yard touchdown. It is decided by who inherits the touches. Jamey Eisenberg, at CBS Sports, leads with two running backs who are already rostered in more than 65 percent of leagues on that platform and are still free elsewhere: Jonah Coleman and Rachaad White. The column warns you to arrive with real FAAB, not September's spare change.

Coleman, and Payton's line

Coleman was on the reserve list with an ankle for four games before Week 7. Against Arizona he led Denver's runners: nine carries, 54 yards, and two catches for 15 yards on two targets. After the game, Sean Payton told reporters he needed more touches. The sentence is clear. The backfield is not: J.K. Dobbins and R.J. Harvey are still there. Eisenberg thinks that, watching Coleman and given Dobbins's injury history, it is a matter of time before the rookie runs the group more steadily. His number: at least 25 percent of the FAAB you have left. In Week 8 he would use him as a flex against Kansas City, with a path to RB2 if he answers well against the Chiefs. On CBS he is rostered in 68 percent of leagues.

White, until Croskey-Merritt is back

White (72 percent on CBS) was on a bye in Week 7. He has at least three games left as Washington's lead runner because Jacory Croskey-Merritt, groin, is on the reserve list. In the first game without him, Week 6 against San Francisco, White had seven carries for 27 yards and four catches for 30 yards and a touchdown, on five targets. He shares the work with Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols until Croskey-Merritt returns, but he has the highest ceiling of the three, especially in PPR. He has cleared 11.1 PPR points in three of his last four games. The bid CBS suggests is at least 20 percent of the remaining FAAB, and it sees him as a starter in Week 8 against Philadelphia if he is free.

Byes, quarterbacks and the rookie receivers

Four teams are on a bye: Houston, New Orleans, the Giants and San Francisco. The bye quarterbacks include Brock Purdy, C.J. Stroud, Trevor Lawrence and J.J. McCarthy. The injury name at the position, in the CBS piece, is Lamar Jackson's ankle again. In shallow leagues it is worth checking whether Kirk Cousins (76 percent) and Aaron Rodgers (70) are still free. Cousins remains the starter in Las Vegas for Week 8, a low-end starter against the Jets: he has posted at least 22.5 fantasy points in five of his last six games. Rodgers managed 15.1 in Week 7 against New Orleans, but before that he had strung together four games over 20.1, including a 27.9 in Week 4 against Cleveland. CBS leaves him as a low-end starter in deep leagues for the rematch with the Browns. As a cut candidate it points to Tyler Shough (93 percent): 17.9 or fewer in three of his last four, and a bye in Week 8. If you need a roster spot, the bye is the moment.

NFL.com ranks a different list for the same week and opens it with rookie receivers, not CBS's two running backs. First is KC Concepcion, of the Browns, who visits Pittsburgh. Behind him are Omar Cooper Jr. (Jets, against Las Vegas), tight end Chig Okonkwo (Washington, against Philadelphia) and Hunter Henry (New England, in Miami). Further down are Rico Dowdle, Kirk Cousins again, Dylan Sampson and, in deep leagues, Ja'Kobi Lane of Baltimore, who still has not played a full game with Jackson. PFF, on 25 October, was pointing the same way: Coleman as the last clear chance to add him, and Cooper and Concepcion among the receivers of the week.

Two lists do not say the same thing because they are not measuring the same roster. CBS sets aside anyone already over 65 percent on its platform and still pushes you to pay for Coleman and White if they are free in yours. NFL.com points you to the receiver who has not even been nominated in many leagues. In 10- and 12-team leagues, the October mistake is bidding 40 percent on the highlight and leaving the backfield that lost its starter at zero. At 00:00 CET on Wednesday this desk's wire closes the bidding: show up with the name and the percentage, not the GIF.

Desk conclusion: in a shallow league, this week's FAAB matters more on the backfield that lost its starter than on the highlight receiver.
